Children with disabilities might feel like they cannot participate in swimming and swimming lessons but that is not the case. Because water safety and swimming is a integral part of childhood all children should take lessons.  Many organizations are seeing the need for disabled swimming and are making lessons available for students who want to learn.

There are many benefits to disabled swimming including aerobic activity. Not only will your child be having fun but they will be getting a good workout at the same time. Swimming will help to strengthen muscles and increase muscular endurance which can make transfers in and out of wheelchairs easier. There are also disabled swimming programs that can help children improve their flexibility and their self control.

Exercise for any child is importnat because children who engage in regular exercise tend to have fewer behavioral problems. As with adults, children can become stressed or angry, and doing something fun and engaging like swimming will allow children to blow off steam and have fun.

There are many different types of disabled swimming that can be adapted to the children’s disability. Instructors can implement life jackets, swim rings, noodles, and floating mats all of which are available to allow children to swim while being safe. Instructors will focus on pool safety so that children can feel comfortable in the pool and will be able to get in and out of the pool safely but the lessons will also focus on normal swimming techniques that can be adapted to a child’s disability.
